Because you aren't supposed to use them in the first place.

phraktl

What part of speech is a "sentence enhancer"? I'm a bit confused as to what that means.

BYOP_mod

President Nixon referred to them as "Expletives". He used them a LOT, as in "Expletive Deleted". That's how they read in the transcripts. But if you listen to the tapes themselves, WOW, What an attitude.

Hrmmm... Cursing "enchances sentences", interesting. I think if one employs their ability to think and rationalize correctly then no further enhancement is needed.

Scoot, don't get me started on a Nixon rant. ;)

Blame your parents?

Blame yourself. If you know you're uneducated, then fix the problem.

Blame the education system, society, George Bush, the Pope, Alex Trebek, Sanjia Malakar....anyone but yourself!

Jon......you're awesome!

Blame yourself. If you know you're uneducated, then fix the problem. Bird, I was being facetious. My point was that the ignorant always blame someone else for their ignorance.

Oh, I know you were.
That was actually my response to BYOP's comment.

what if you're not able to be smart?(mental illness)

phraktl
03-28-2007, 06:00 PM
Then you wouldn't know that you were deficient. However, that gives no benefit to those who have to deal with you.

iamblackbird
03-28-2007, 08:55 PM
I'm only talking about those who KNOW that they are ignorant.

BYOP_mod
03-28-2007, 11:35 PM
i'm not ignorant....i don't think.

phraktl
03-29-2007, 06:39 PM
Ignorance would be predicated on not knowing. Therefore, it would seem that it requires an outside party to provide the judgment of whether or not one is ignorant.

BYOP: For me, it's a regular speech pattern. Words are my life (I'm a writer and english major), and therefore spend a great deal of my time reading and learning the English language.

"big words" come with the territory. I even use them when I'm drunk. :)

I know what you mean Bird. I have always been fascinated with language. I guess it was from being the third generation in America on both sides of my family. I was raised with great importance on language. My interest in philosophy and physics have been particularly instrumental in my development.

My wife has a degree in mass-communications/print journalism and my sister-in-law is an English teacher. I don't get away with anything! ;)

BYOP: "Big words" are nothing. No word is any "bigger" than another. English is your mother tongue, I am assuming, so there is no reason to be put off by any of it. All that is lacking is application, not ability.

i don't think i ever said anything about big words, just that the way u placed them confused me a little. and phraktl, theres a difference in word sizes: for example, Dioxyribonucleic is a bit bigger then "ok" don't ya think? btw,i might have mispelled it but u get it don't ya?

iamblackbird
04-01-2007, 11:19 AM
"ok" is actually the truncated spelling :) It's actually "okay".

I think what Phraktl is getting at is the idea that each word conveys a meaning, making no word more important than another.

BYOP_mod
04-01-2007, 08:30 PM
yea.i know that one word is no more important than another but they are bigger in size.again, where did the big word subject show up?all i was talkin about was placement

phraktl
04-01-2007, 10:40 PM
Bird, you are correct. No word is more important than another. Some are simply used more often than others. I don't see why anyone should be put off by the use of "uncommon" words. Our language is capable of so much and it seems a waste to allow only five percent of it to be used regularly.

BYOP: I still am left wondering what you mean by placement of words. You are simply referring to sentences.

Perhaps I should talk in my native tongue. I bet you folks would have a heck of a time understanding Gaelic!

Jameson13

But as you know Birdy, I can speak Spanish as well. We'll call it......Spaelic! I also speak Italian, German, and Some Japanese (enough to get around Tokyo)
