View Full Version : foot/ankle tats?

I've heard some negative things about foot tats, mainly that they're pretty painful and the ink may blur a bit more than in other areas over time. What I have in mind is just something simple (toying with the idea of a smattering of music notes to celebrate the completion of recording my CD). I'd like to place the tattoo on my lower ankle/upper foot.... if that description makes sense. Depending on exactly how I arrange the notes I'd either like it in the depression behind my outer ankle bone (really very low ankle placement directly above the heal) or in front of the ankle bone kinda right below where my ankle and foot meet.
Anyone have any info/experiences they can share about success (and pain) of tats in that area?
Thanks! :)

I have a fairly elaborate tattoo on the top of my foot and yeah it hurts.
Some of the colours are faded, mostly the lighter ones like white and the chocolate, but all in all I'm very pleased with it.
Just know that here where I'm at there isn't a shop that will touch up the foot for free because they know its going to fade.. as far as blurring i couldn't really say. My lines seem to be sharp but it's all colour and not much outline.
I say get it though. It's definatly one that is for you to enjoy and not others...and the pain is huge but at the end you can look at it with pride of what you went through and what it means to you.

I have one on the top of my foot also. I have had no problems with blurring (I have had it for 8 years) and it has faded no more than my other tats! I would say go for it!

Ok... cool :)
Now I need to design something really good.... Right now I have one tat. It's a butterfly and I find it very beautiful, but it's not really a personal design. If that makes sense. I want my next tat to mean something. The location I chose (foot/ankle) obviously impacts the design, and I know I want something relatively simple anyway..... If anyone comes across pics of music-type tats for inspiration let me know! I've gone through most everything on BME.

well I have the artistic talent of a brick stuck in dirt so I let my artist design stuff.
I find I get a better tattoo if I just give him a concept and let him go at it. It usually exceeds my expectations and I walk away with something unique.
Just find someone you are comfy with and someone you like their work...and this is because i'm a total tattoo snob but I hate those shops are that flash shops.
If an artist won't talk about your piece and take time to draw it up and give you a custom tattoo to suit you he/she isn't worthy to tattoo you or anyone else in my opinion.

I have a tattoo on my right foot, that also encircles my ankle bone, and it HURT! I have 4 tattoos total, and that one was by far the most painful, but so far my favorite one. Healing it was a bit more difficult than most other places on the body. I got mine done on a friday afternoon, so that I could spend the whole weekend at home without shoes on!! lol I also did what Nioch was talking about, I had a basic idea of what I wanted, and let my artist turn that idea into something unique and perfect for MY foot.
Good Luck with the tat!! :)
