I really don't think that's normal, but I don't have my tounge peirced, so I can't tell you from experience. But I know my friend dosen't have a bump on his tounge. Mabye you should call your peircer, as long as s/he's exerienced and professional.

No, it definitely is not a good idea to change your jewelry so soon!

Regarding how to help the bump - if you're using any mouthwash like Listerine, stop it. *Alcohol is horrible for piercings and should never be let near them. *HERE (http://bodyjewelryforum.painfulpleasures.com/kb.php?mode=article&k=39) are the instructions for a sea salt soak - instead of using a cup, of course, you should get a mouthful of the (NON-iodized!) seasalty water and swish it around for a few minutes twice a day OR after meals.

If you haven't been doing the sea salt soaks, start doing them and see what the bump looks like after a few days.

After a few days / if you've already been doing sea salt soaks, go straight to your piercer and have it checked out.

Keep us updated!

Right now, taking out the jewelry would cause whatever bump or problem that you are having to become worse. So don't do it, unless the jewelry is too short, or incredibly too long...in which case, see a piercer.

If this isn't the case, then you need to just do some basic, diligent aftercare, like prescribed above, and you should see some improvement.

The barbell is going to be long. Everyone I have ever known to get their tongue pierced got it pierced with an extra long barbell, simply to allow for swelling. Do all the aftercare stuff listed above, and in two weeks you should be able to change to a regular sized barbell.

Please note, you should never remove the jewelry to clean the piercing...you are perfectly able to clean the piercing without removing the jewelry. *It does a lot of damage removing the jewerly before it's healed, and it gets plenty clean without removing the jewelry.

As Ria has said, removing it is not a good idea. I knew a girl who kept doing that and it took hers three times longer to heal than mine, now it might have done that besides the point, but I think the constant removal of the jewelry played a very large factor in it.

OH yeh, Buzz, it's definately a, if not THE, factor to the healing time.

A piercing can't heal if you're constantly putting friction on it, scraping the inside of the hole with the jewelry. *It scrapes all the healing cells off, and makes it raw. *It's like pulling the scab off a wound...it won't heal as long as you keep picking the scab.
