Playing volleyball should be fine. You might hurt it one day, just by hitting your mouth really hard or bite your tongue, but that has nothing to do with it being healed or unhealed.
Will you be able to totally hide it from your parents? Maybe for a little while, but not for a really long time. You should just plan on them knowing to save trouble down the road.

Parents are good at noticing things like that real quick.

Welcome to the boards!
Let's see...volleycall should be fine, unless you happen to stick your tongue out a lot during play, or chomping down on it.
Hiding it could be more difficult. Since you can't change the initial jewelry for a bit, you're stuck with the barbell...which, unless you keep your mouth relatively closed around your parents, and can learn to speak around the barbell really quickly, they will most likely notice.

how old are you? in vancouver the piercing age is what, 16? so you wouldn't need parental permission? if you would need parental permission, i wouldn't recommend going to a shop that will pierce you without it...they're breaking the law, risking a lawsuit, and a lot of times possibly risking your health.
if you don't need parental permission, i'd suggest talking to your parents ahead of time to try and come to an agreement on it...otherwise if they find out they'll probably make you take it out, or ground you or something...
if you're getting it pierced legally without their permission, and want to try to hide it, i'd suggest getting DENTAL acryllic (regular acryllic is BAD, make sure it's DENTAL acryllic) jewelry, in light pink...to match the color of your tongue better than metal would, be slightly less noticible. however, it is still noticible.

everyone is different like i said mine was bad i work in a call center and wouldnt have been able to work i swelled bad and could not talk plus was eating plain liquids for about 2 weeks. my bf however got his done a week after and was eating chicken burgers with in hours and his speech and swelling was fine. I think it all depends on the person my gf got hers done and was swollen for 2 months and couldnt talk right. the dental flat acryllics are great also known as hidems my parents still dont know all depends on the person we all have different experiences

Quick note:
Be careful if all you ever wear is the hide-ems. Some people have adverse reactions to the acrylic, since that's not one of the best materials to have in a piercing long-term.

unfortunatly i dont have much of a choice with acryllics im allergic to the metal i wear the half circle balls flat on the bottom never had any problems yet ive tried to wear metal but my tongue swells pretty bad and starts to crack

what metals have you tried, lynette? if you're alergic to steel you should try titanium or niobium, people are almost never alergic to those...you can get gold, too...

to be honest ive never looked into different metals just what i got peirced with and then diff ones i bought i also find that balls on the top irritate my tongue as well thats why i like the flat ones and it can be acryllic ball that irritates i think ill look around when i go to vancouver because they will have alot more selection then we have here

so is niobium :)
stainless steel is in almost all situations (95% of the time), but for some people, the minimal amount of nickel does bother.
but titanium and niobium have no nickel at all :)
can u get the half balls in those?? i was thinking even trying gold but to spend that much on things that no one ever sees u know.
